for the year ended 31st December 2024

Trustees report to the Friends for the year ended 31 December 2024 Trustees who served throughout the year were Helen Hendry, Brian Shepherd, and Simon Sweeney. The society’s revised constitution, adopted at a trustees meeting on 13 November 2023, is now shown on the trust’s web site. Action is in hand to appoint the following new trustees:
Jeremy Dick, Elaine Rutherford, Guy Shuttleworth, Kim Ward and Jim Warrington.
Tim Hunt and John Eastlake remain as committed volunteers.
Membership: we have 53 members at 31/12/2024
Work done in the Glebe in 2024 was as follows Partial removal of hogweed flower heads and dock seeds, including mechanical topping of the hogweed in the areas of worst infestation. Paths and bowl between the mounds mowed as required. We are grateful to the Church for the upcoming use in 2025 of their mower. Autumn/early winter sheep grazing resulted in close cropping of all grass Cutting back of brambles and raspberries on the mounds
Clearance of grass and other vegetation adjacent to the 2019-planted hedging.
Mowing and harvesting of grass etc. in the meadows. The outcome of the 2023 spreading of flower-seed rich hay has not generated the hoped for result. In late 2024 we purchased a tractor attachment for mowing the meadows in 2025 and are hopeful that this will further reduce the meadow grass vigour, enabling more wild flowers to flourish. We wish to thank Michael Rickatson for our previous years’ use of his tractor attachment
Bonfire of brash
We continue to be extremely thankful for the physical and financial support provided by the Friends, and wish to acknowledge the grant from the Village Market committee which supported buying the mowing attachment, and the generous donation from Bonnie Lawson’s jewellery sale.
To continue: Increasing Friends numbers and awareness of the Glebe. We are always looking to recruit new members and welcome new referrals.
Mowing of paths and the bowl Bramble, hogweed, and dock control
Keep immediate area around new hedge free of encroaching vegetation Late summer mowing of meadow areas, and removal of cut grass
Sheep grazing in autumn/early winter
Replace any dead slips in new hedge
Appropriate harvesting of yellow rattle seed from tennis court and sowing this and other sourced material elsewhere in meadows
To complete:
Removal and responsible disposal this year of plastic tree guards from slips planted in 2019
Updating of website and addition of extra information boards at Glebe entrances
To consider:
Removal of grass etc. from bottom of south pond and cutting back of overhanging tree branches Re-lining of the east pond to eliminate leakage
