Dr Simon Elliott will be launching his new book, The African Emperor with a talk, Q&A and book signing on Thursday 9 October, 7pm.

“Septimius Severus was the Roman Empire’s African emperor. Born in the blazing heat of a Libyan spring in Leptis Magna in AD 145, his story arc is truly astonishing, ending with his death in the freezing cold of a northern British winter in York in February AD 211. His career is one of superlatives. Ruling at the height of Roman military power, he commanded more legions than any other emperor. Further, under his rule permanent Roman territory was expanded to its greatest extent. Given this martial prowess, I argue in my new full biography that he was the most powerful person ever born in Africa, based purely on military and political agency.” - Dr Simon Elliott

We are extremely honoured to be one of the charities benefitting from the first ever Malton Regency Ball, taking place in the Milton Rooms on Friday 17 October, 7-11pm. Book tickets now!

“From adolescence, I have imagined myself in the worlds I’d read about in Jane Austen and Georgiette Heyer’s novels. It is so special to get a glimpse at such sumptuous Regency life and to have a go myself.

Hosting a Country Regency Ball in Malton has been a long cherished idea and the 250th anniversary year of Jane Austen's birth seemed the ideal time to finally achieve it.

We’ve planned an evening where everybody can experience the joy and laughter of whirling round the dance floor, in a lovely dress or suit, with an enthusiastic partner, lit by over 100 candelabra, expertly guided by our dance mistress, Lottie and all to the sounds of a real Regency string quartet. This evening will be something very special, and I would urge you to get involved if you’re free!

My new dress is made, my new fan ordered, my dance shoes polished, and I am excitedly waiting, with my empty dance card! We have sold many tickets, but we'd love to sell more, meet more lovely people and raise more money for two fantastic local charities.”

Quiz master Dave Wells is preparing the questions for our popular Big Quiz, which tests your knowledge in a variety of rounds - who will take home the prize for best team?!

This event sold out last time, so book your tickets now! One booking per team of 4 people.

  The new museum kickstarter fund has got off to a flying start, thanks to the generosity of our supporters.
